Herbert celebrates one year of Doze Under Dippy events

The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum is celebrating one year of its popular Doze Under Dippy sleepover events, which have welcomed families, Scouts, Brownies, and schools to a unique night spent under the gaze of the iconic Dippy, the Nation’s Favourite Dinosaur.

Since the launch of the programme in November 2023, hundreds of participants have enjoyed this unusual sleepover experience, with the events becoming a major draw for families and groups. What began as an exciting new venture has quickly become a fixture in the museum’s calendar, with lots of families trying out this new offer, and a steady stream of interest.

Speaking of the success of the programme, Lisa Ford, Head of Learning and Engagement at the Herbert, said: “In its first year, Doze Under Dippy has presented us with an exciting new opportunity. Sleepovers are not something we had ever done at the museum before, but something we had long had ambitions for. They offer a unique experience for our family visitors, with children always leaving in awe of having slept at the feet of Dippy!

“We’ve even had some families join us to celebrate special occasions, such as birthdays, and when we know about this in advance we will happily bestow some extra attention on the birthday child.

“There is something really magical about knowing you are taking part in a real life ‘night in the museum’ and creating memories to last a lifetime. We have also seen a real increase in organised groups booking private events and we will continue to welcome groups, including schools for fun-filled one-night residentials.

With plans for more sleepovers in the coming months, the museum is thrilled to be able to continue offering this unique and memorable experience to children in the region and beyond.
