CV Life’s popular Sporting Memories event has started going on tour.
The Coventry Moves project is aimed at engaging older people and dementia sufferers and getting them looking back at their lives through the lens of sport.
The monthly event, compered by Coventry athletics legend Dave Moorcroft, has had some genuine Coventry icons as guests in recent months, including FA Cup winners Steve Ogrizovic and Dave Bennett.
But while the usual format will remain, every second month there are plans for participants to go on a day trip to a sporting event.
Last week, the first Sporting Memories On Tour event saw the group visit stables belonging to a famous race horse trainer, before heading for an afternoon at Bath Races.
The event proved so popular, plans are afoot to make it a regular bi-monthly event.
Andrei Roman, who is community project coordinator for CV Life, said: “The event recently went down really well with everyone who attended.
“We left Coventry at 9am and arrived at Adrian Wintle Stables close to Gloucester at about 10.30am.
“We learned about the horses, how they’re looked after, fed, and prepared for races.
“It was a new experience for all of the participants so it was brilliant to see them engaging with the horses – one or two of them didn’t want to leave!
“We also had the chance to feed the horses ourselves, with apples, carrots and pears, followed by refreshments for ourselves with everyone getting tea and biscuits.”
Andrei added: “From there we went to Bath Racecourse. Everyone had a really good time and they all thoroughly enjoyed themselves – we didn’t get back to Coventry until around 8.30pm.”
The next Sporting Memories day trip will take place on 31 October. The plan is for participants to visit Adrian’s stable again, before heading to Wolverhampton Racecourse.
Tickets cost £15 per person and include travel, tour of the stables, tea and coffee while there, as well as entry to the racecourse and a free drink on arrival.
