“I love working with people,” meet 58-year-old Mick who became a lifeguard after retiring

CV Life is celebrating the recent National Lifeguard Appreciation Day by shining a light on an individual member of our diverse and dedicated team.

Among the many lifeguards that make swimming a possibility across our sites is Mick, a 58-year-old based out of the Alan Higgs Centre, who embodies the spirit of lifelong learning and community service.

Mick joined CV Life two years ago after taking early retirement from his previous role as a site services officer at a local Coventry school. His journey into lifeguarding encapsulates the idea that it’s never too late to pursue passion, be it a new or old one, and make a significant impact.

Reflecting on his move into lifeguarding, Mick said: “After retiring early at 56 I wanted a little job that would keep me active. I wanted something I could enjoy, but not have to take home with me.

“I had connections at CV Life, I was actually a lifeguard when I was 18 at the old sport centre on Fairfax Street, so lifeguarding just felt like a natural choice.

“I love working with people, which is what I’ve always done. It’s been incredibly rewarding and I’ve made some great friends among my colleagues – even though most of them are two generations younger than me! The free annual gym membership for myself and partner at all CV Life Fitness Centres is a big employee benefit.”

“I’d recommend lifeguarding to other people my age – if you’re still fairly fit and active, and you can swim at a fair pace without stopping to catch your breath every few seconds, then apply for a role”.

Rachel Smith, CV Life’s Recruitment and Retention Officer, expressed her admiration for Mick.

“Mick’s dedication and enthusiasm are fantastic,” she said. “His story highlights the fact that lifeguarding is not just for the young. We encourage people like Mick, especially those who are looking for a fulfilling way to stay active in their later years, to consider joining us. Lifeguarding offers a chance to be part of a team and stay fit, all while playing a vital role in ensuring the safety of our community.”

Rachel added: “CV Life values the unique experiences and perspectives that individuals with a healthy life experience are able to bring to the table. Lifeguarding requires vigilance, responsibility and the ability to stay calm under pressure – which are all qualities that Mick developed over his life and career and now utilises in his work at the pool.

“There is a national shortage of Lifeguards and we are always recruiting with adverts coming out every month.  Either take a look at the CV Life Vacancies page where you will find further information or fill out an application form. We are putting on some future Lifeguard recruitment sessions and these will be advertised on our socials very soon.”

National Lifeguard Appreciation Day, which fell on 31 July, serves as an opportunity to recognise the hard work and commitment of lifeguards like Mick, who ensure the safety of swimmers and create a welcoming environment for everyone.
